What makes a chore chart actually work

One chart, one place. Put it where everyone passes several times a day: the fridge, the back of the front door, next to the toothbrushes. A chart in a drawer is a chart nobody follows.

Visible fairness. Kids notice instantly when a sibling "got the easy one". The coloured points bars make the split obvious, and rotating chores weekly stops the same person always scrubbing the toilet.

Small, specific jobs. "Clean your room" is vague; "put clothes in the hamper" is checkable. Use the chore list for concrete wording.

A short feedback loop. Tick things off the same day. Younger children do best with a sticker-style reward chart; older kids with the points and streak tracker.

Chore chart questions

Is this chore chart maker really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no trial and no watermark. Your chart is saved in your own browser, and you can print it or save it as a PDF as often as you like.

How do I make a printable chore chart?

Add the people in your home, add chores (or load a template), tap the circles to choose which days each chore is due, then press "Print or save as PDF". The print layout hides the editor so only the chart goes on paper.

How many chores should a child have?

As a general suggestion, preschoolers manage 2–3 short daily jobs, school-age kids 3–5 plus one weekly job, and teens a handful of daily jobs plus one or two bigger weekly ones. Start small and add one new chore at a time.

What do the points mean?

Points reflect effort: 1 for a quick job, 2 for a medium one, 3 for a big one. The bars under the chart show each person's weekly total so you can see at a glance whether the split is fair. "Even out points" re-splits it for you.

Can I use it for adults or roommates?

Yes. Names are free text and nothing assumes kids. There are ready-made couple and roommate templates, and the chore wheel page handles weekly rotation for shared houses.
